St
Nicholas Graveyard List 1841 – 2007
It was only in 1931,
according to the book written by James Eccles about the Centenary of Halewood
Parish Church, that it was decided that the graves in the Parish graveyard
should be numbered. The quote from the book reads:
“There were plans of
graves showing family names, but they were confined to the newer parts of the
Churchyard and lacked details of the number and names of those buried in each
grave. Sixty graves were without headstones and many were losing their
inscriptions. The Register should be compiled while survivors were able to
supply the necessary information. For the purpose, the graves would require
numbering.”
At
this stage the graveyard had been in use for ninety years, there was no chance
that anyone’s memory would extend back that far! So unfortunately this list is
incomplete. Everyone on the list is interred in the graveyard somewhere and
where possible the year and the age at which they died is noted but because the
records are incomplete, unfortunately it is impossible to allocate a grave
number to everyone. Therefore, please note,
if there is no number by the name you are seeking then we cannot be sure where
that person is buried, the only indication may be in an area allocated to the
date of the death of the deceased.
The
list can be updated and so if you have any further information regarding the
Graveyard list please inform the Parish office.
